What to Pack for a Vermont Weekend Getaway

A weekend in Vermont sounds simple enough. Throw a few things in a bag, head north, and figure out the rest when you get there.

The only problem is that Vermont weather doesn't always make packing quite that easy.

A sunny afternoon can turn into a cool evening pretty quickly, especially as summer gives way to fall. You might spend the morning walking around Burlington, head out for a hike in the afternoon, and end the day at a brewery or restaurant downtown. The best Vermont weekend wardrobe is one that can keep up without requiring a different outfit for every stop.

That's why we tend to pack a little lighter and focus on pieces that can do more than one job. A good T-shirt, an easy layer, comfortable pants and, depending on the season, a good beanie will take you surprisingly far.

Whether you're heading to Burlington for the weekend or exploring somewhere a little farther out, here's what we'd bring.

Start With a Good T-Shirt

A weekend away usually starts with a simple T-shirt.

It's the foundation of an easy outfit and can work on its own when the weather is warm or underneath a sweater, overshirt or jacket when temperatures drop. Look for something comfortable enough to wear all day and well-made enough that you don't have to think about it.

A good T-shirt also makes packing easier. Choose one or two colors that work with the rest of what you're bringing and you can build several outfits without filling your bag.

For a Vermont weekend, we'd lean toward a classic tee such as our Men's Solid Interlock Tee - it works just as well with jeans in Burlington as it does with shorts on a trail.

Pack One Good Layer

This is where Vermont weather starts to complicate things.

Even in the warmer months, mornings and evenings can feel considerably different from the middle of the day. In the fall, that difference becomes even more noticeable.

Instead of packing several layers, bring one versatile piece that you can throw over a T-shirt when you need it. A cardigan, lightweight sweater, vest or other easy layer can make a big difference without taking up much room. A reversible vest is even better, as it give you two color options!

The trick is choosing something you actually want to wear. Your extra layer shouldn't feel like something you brought only because the forecast told you to. It should be part of the outfit.

Don't Forget Your Beanie

If there's one thing we'd argue deserves a permanent place in a Vermont weekend bag, it's a beanie.

Even if you're visiting in early fall and the forecast looks relatively mild, temperatures can drop quickly once the sun goes down. A beanie takes up almost no room in your bag and can make a cool morning, windy hike or evening around a fire much more comfortable.

It's also one of those accessories that works across an entire weekend. Wear it with a sweatshirt for an early morning coffee run, throw it on before a hike or pair it with a jacket for dinner downtown.

And in Vermont, there's a good chance you'll eventually need one anyway.

At 4T2D, our beanies are designed and manufactured in Burlington, Vermont, with different fits and styles to suit how you like to wear them. A classic cuffed beanie is an easy everyday option, while skully, midi and pom styles give you a little more room to find something that fits your style.

If you're visiting Vermont in September or October, we'd definitely put one in the bag.

Bring Comfortable Pants

A Vermont weekend usually involves more walking than you planned.

Maybe you're exploring Church Street in Burlington. Maybe you're heading out for a hike. Maybe you're driving from town to town and stopping whenever something looks interesting.

Either way, comfortable pants are worth prioritizing.

A good pair of jeans can work for almost everything, especially if you're spending most of your time in town. For warmer weather or more active weekends, lightweight pants or shorts can give you a little more flexibility.

The goal isn't to pack an outfit for every possible activity. It's to bring bottoms that can comfortably handle several of them.

One Outfit for Going Out

Vermont is casual, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't bring something that feels a little more put together.

One button-up, nicer sweater or favorite pair of jeans can quickly turn your daytime outfit into something that works for dinner or drinks.

This is another reason to think in terms of versatile pieces rather than complete outfits. If everything you bring works together, you can change the look without changing your entire wardrobe.

A simple T-shirt with jeans and a cardigan can look just as appropriate at a Burlington restaurant as it does walking around town earlier in the day.

If You're Hiking, Keep It Simple

You don't need to completely change your wardrobe for a weekend hike.

Start with comfortable clothing that can handle movement and changing temperatures. A breathable T-shirt, lightweight layer and comfortable pants or shorts are a good place to start.

Then bring your beanie.

For longer hikes or colder-weather trips, you'll obviously want to think more carefully about footwear, weather protection and technical layers. But for a casual trail or shorter walk, you can keep the clothing side of your packing list pretty straightforward.

And don't forget that Vermont's weather can change quickly. Check the forecast before heading out and bring an additional layer if conditions call for it.

A Few Things That Are Easy to Forget

Clothing gets most of the attention when you're packing, but a few smaller things can make a weekend away much easier.

Bring:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • A light rain jacket or weatherproof layer
  • Sunglasses
  • A reusable water bottle
  • A small daypack
  • Extra socks
  • Sunscreen
  • Your favorite beanie

That last one might seem overly specific, but we stand by it.

Pack for the Day You Actually Have

The best Vermont weekend wardrobe isn't necessarily the one with the most options.

It's the one that works wherever the day takes you.

You might wake up in Burlington, grab coffee, spend a few hours outside, wander around town, find a great place for lunch and end the evening somewhere that wasn't even on your original itinerary. That's part of what makes a weekend in Vermont fun.

Bring clothing that can move with you.

A few good basics, one or two layers, comfortable shoes and a beanie are enough to cover a lot of ground. And because the weather can change quickly, having a lightweight layer and something warm for your head can be the difference between being comfortable and wishing you'd packed a little more.

What We'd Actually Pack

If we were heading out for a two-night Vermont weekend, our bag would probably look something like this:

2 T-shirts
Easy to wear on their own or underneath a layer.

1 sweater, cardigan or vest
Something comfortable that works from morning through evening.

1 beanie
Preferably a Vermont-made 4T2D beanie, especially for fall.

1 pair of jeans or everyday pants
Something comfortable enough for walking and casual enough for dinner.

1 pair of shorts or lightweight pants
Depending on the season.

1 nicer shirt
For dinner, drinks or whenever you want to clean things up a little.

Comfortable shoes
You'll probably walk more than you expect.

Lightweight weather layer
Because it's Vermont.

That's really about it.
