One of the best parts of running a boutique is getting to decide what belongs inside it.
At 4T2D, we spend a lot of time thinking about that. There are plenty of good clothing brands out there, but we aren't interested in carrying something just because it's popular or looks good on a rack. We want to know how it's made, where it's made, and whether we'd actually want to wear it ourselves.
That thinking has shaped the collection at our Burlington boutique.
Alongside our own Vermont-made apparel and beanies, you'll find a small group of American brands that we genuinely like. Some have been making things in the United States for generations. Others are smaller independent companies taking a thoughtful approach to modern clothing and accessories.
They all bring something a little different to the store, but they share a few things we care about: good materials, solid construction, comfortable designs and products that you'll want to keep wearing.
Sven
If you've spent much time around the 4T2D boutique, you've probably noticed the Sven clogs.
Sven has been making clogs in Minnesota since 1974, and the brand has developed a loyal following for good reason. The shoes have a distinctive look, but they're also made to be worn. They're the kind of footwear that works with jeans, dresses, shorts and just about everything in between.
We particularly like that Sven hasn't tried to reinvent the clog every season. The designs have a familiar character that has held up over the years, while different colors, materials and silhouettes give people plenty of ways to make them their own.
For a Vermont boutique, they also make a lot of sense. We spend plenty of time on our feet, walking around Burlington, heading out for the weekend or simply going about our day. Having a comfortable pair of shoes that you can reach for again and again matters.
You'll find several Sven styles in the 4T2D Boutique, from low-heel clogs to wedges and more distinctive silhouettes.
Just Black Denim
Good denim can be surprisingly difficult to find.
The fit has to be right. The fabric needs to feel good. And ideally, you want a pair that works with the rest of your closet instead of requiring you to build an outfit around it.
That's part of what drew us to Just Black Denim.
The California-based brand produces its denim in Los Angeles and focuses on modern fits that are still practical enough for everyday wear. The current collection at 4T2D includes wide-leg styles, utility shorts and other pieces that bring a little personality to a wardrobe without feeling overly complicated.
We've always liked clothing that gets better the more you wear it. A favorite pair of jeans tends to become exactly that. They get pulled on for errands, dinner, travel, work and weekends, eventually becoming one of those pieces you don't have to think about.
Just Black Denim fits nicely into that part of the 4T2D wardrobe.
Whalerknits
Vermont weather has a way of making you appreciate a good sweater.
Whalerknits comes from Fall River, Massachusetts, and the brand's collection has a distinctly New England feel. You'll find classic knits, stripes and textures that work particularly well when temperatures start dropping and you want something warmer without giving up on style.
The Nantucket Rollneck, Westport Thin Striped Crew and Sakonnet Birdseye Sweater are good examples of the kind of pieces we're drawn to. They're recognizable without being overly trendy, and they're easy to work into a wardrobe you already have.
There's also something fitting about carrying a Massachusetts-made knitwear brand in a Burlington store. The places may be different, but the way people dress for life in New England has plenty of overlap.
A good sweater should be able to handle a cool morning, an afternoon downtown and dinner outside. That's the kind of clothing we look for.
Leisure Lab
Leisure Lab takes a slightly more relaxed approach.
Made in Los Angeles, the brand focuses on comfortable everyday pieces that don't feel like they're trying too hard. The current 4T2D collection includes the Baja Shorts, men's stretch woven chino shorts, a cotton tweed button-up and the Ojai Skirt.
These are the kinds of pieces that make sense for summer in Vermont, but don't necessarily disappear when the season changes. A pair of shorts can come along for a weekend away. A button-up can work for dinner or be thrown over a T-shirt. The Ojai Skirt can be dressed up or kept casual depending on the day.
That versatility is important to us.
We don't want a store full of clothing that only works for one occasion. We'd rather have pieces that people can actually live in.
The Ampal Creative
The Ampal Creative brings something different to the mix.
Based in Los Angeles, the brand makes hats with a strong sense of personality. The current boutique collection includes several trucker styles, including the Passin Thru, Wild Flowers, Monstera and Roper Suede.
They're a good example of why we don't want the boutique to feel too predictable.
Not everything needs to be a basic.
Sometimes an accessory is what makes an otherwise simple outfit feel like your own. A good hat can do that without requiring much else.
Why These Brands?
There's no formula that says every brand we carry has to look the same.
In fact, we like that they don't.
Sven has a long history of American-made footwear. Just Black Denim brings contemporary denim from Los Angeles. Whalerknits has that unmistakable New England connection. Leisure Lab approaches everyday clothing from a more relaxed West Coast perspective. The Ampal Creative adds some personality through hats and accessories.
What connects them is the way they approach making things.
We're interested in companies that care about their products and have a clear point of view. We want to be able to tell someone where something came from and why we decided to put it on the shelf.
That's especially important now that 4T2D has grown into a lifestyle boutique.
We make many of our own products here in Vermont, including our beanies, and we wanted the other brands in the store to feel like a natural extension of that same idea. The result isn't a huge selection of brands. It's a smaller one that we've had a reason to choose.
A Boutique Built Around Things We Actually Like
That's probably the simplest way to explain what we're doing at 4T2D.
We're not trying to carry everything.
We're trying to carry things we like.
Some of those products are designed and made by us here in Vermont. Others come from makers and brands across the country. Together, they make up a collection that feels right for the way we live and dress in Burlington.

We'd rather have a smaller collection of things we're proud to stand behind than a store full of products we don't know much about.
That's what we're looking for when we meet a new maker, and it's what we'll continue looking for as the boutique grows.
