There’s something about fall in Vermont that makes you start carrying a few extra things with you.
A light jacket. A flannel or sweater. Maybe a thermos of coffee. And, almost always, a beanie.
September and October in Vermont are some of the best months of the year, but they can also be a little unpredictable. A morning in Burlington might start out crisp and cool, warm up in the afternoon, and then turn chilly again as soon as the sun goes down. If you're heading into the mountains, the temperature can change even faster.
That’s why a good beanie is one of those simple things that earns a permanent spot in your bag once fall arrives. It doesn't take up much room, works with just about anything you're wearing, and gives you an easy way to stay comfortable when the temperature drops.
At 4T2D, we make our beanies right here in Burlington, Vermont, in a range of styles, colors and patterns. Whether you're heading out for a weekend in the mountains, walking around Church Street, or just grabbing coffee on a cool October morning, there’s a good chance you'll find a reason to reach for one.
Fall Weather in Vermont Can Change Quickly
If you've spent much time in Vermont during the fall, you already know that checking the weather once isn't always enough.
Early mornings can be cold enough for a hat and jacket, while the afternoon sun can make it feel like summer again. Once the sun goes down, though, you'll probably be happy you brought an extra layer.
That’s part of what makes fall here so enjoyable. You get a little bit of everything. Crisp mornings, sunny afternoons, cool evenings and plenty of time outside.
A beanie is an easy way to adapt without carrying around another bulky layer. Toss one in your backpack, car, tote bag or jacket pocket and you have something ready to go when the temperature drops.
And unlike a heavy winter hat, a fall beanie doesn't have to feel like you're preparing for January. A lighter knit can add just enough warmth while still being comfortable when you're moving around.
The Best Fall Activities Usually Involve Being Outside

Fall in Vermont isn't really a season you want to spend indoors.
It's the time of year for scenic drives, weekend hikes, farmers markets, apple picking, brewery patios, football games and long walks through town. The leaves are changing, the mountains are putting on a show, and there are plenty of reasons to stay outside a little longer.
That’s where a beanie comes in.
Heading out for a hike in Stowe or the Green Mountains? Throw one in your pack.
Walking around Burlington on a chilly morning? Put one on before you leave.
Going to a fall festival or spending the afternoon at a local market? You'll probably be glad you brought it when the sun starts to disappear.
Even if you don't end up wearing it all day, having a beanie with you means you're ready when the temperature changes.
Finding the Right Beanie for Fall
Not every beanie feels the same, and the style you reach for often depends on how you like to wear it.
A cuffed beanie is a classic choice. The folded cuff gives it a little more structure and makes it easy to adjust the fit. It's the kind of hat that works just as well with a flannel and jeans as it does with a jacket and hiking boots.
A skully has a lower-profile fit and sits closer to the head. It's a good option if you prefer something simple and understated, especially for everyday wear around town.
Then there are yarn pom and faux fur pom beanies, which bring a little more personality into the mix. Fall is a good time to have some fun with color and pattern, and a pom can be an easy way to add something different to an otherwise simple outfit.
There isn't really a right or wrong choice. It mostly comes down to how you like your beanie to fit and what you plan to do while you're wearing it.
A Beanie Should Work With Your Everyday Clothes

One of the best things about a good beanie is how little thought it requires.
You can throw on a T-shirt, jeans, a jacket and a beanie and you're ready to go. When it gets colder, swap the T-shirt for a sweater and you're still good to go. The right beanie should fit naturally into the rest of your wardrobe rather than feeling like something you only wear for specific activities.
That's especially true in Vermont, where clothing tends to be practical. You want things that look good, but they also need to work when you're actually outside.
At 4T2D, that's one of the ideas behind the beanies we make in Burlington. We make a range of styles because everyone wears them a little differently, but the goal is the same: comfortable, well-made hats that you can actually live in.
Don't Forget the Beanie on Your Next Vermont Weekend
If you're heading out of town for a fall weekend, a beanie is one of the easiest things to pack.
It takes up almost no space, doesn't need to be carefully folded, and can make a noticeable difference when you're standing around outside on a cool morning or walking back to the car after dinner.
Pack one for a trip to Stowe. Bring one along for a weekend in the Northeast Kingdom. Keep one in your bag for a day exploring Burlington. You may not need it when you leave the house, but you'll be happy to have it when the temperature drops.
And if you're traveling through Vermont in October, there's a good chance you'll be spending more time outside than you planned anyway.
Fall Is Beanie Season in Vermont
There's a short window in Vermont when the air is cold enough for a beanie but you haven't quite reached the heavy layers of winter.
That's one of our favorite times of year.
The mountains are changing color, the days are getting shorter, and people start pulling their favorite sweaters and jackets out of the closet. A beanie fits right into that transition.
It's practical without being bulky, comfortable without being complicated, and easy to bring with you wherever the day takes you.
For us, there's something fitting about making them here in Burlington. Vermont is the kind of place where you spend a lot of time outside, and the things you wear need to keep up with that. Our beanies are designed and manufactured here with that everyday Vermont lifestyle in mind.
So as you start packing for fall, don't forget the simple stuff. A good jacket, a comfortable pair of shoes, maybe a favorite sweater, and a beanie that you can throw in your bag just in case.
Because in Vermont, "just in case" usually turns out to be a pretty good reason to bring a hat.
